SpeechNet is built by someone who's dyslexic, for people who'd rather talk than type. The app and this site should work for as many people as possible.
This website
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. In practice:
- Everything works with the keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a "Skip to content" link.
- Body text uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed so similar letters are easy to tell apart.
- Text and background colours meet AA contrast, in both light and dark mode.
- Text sizes follow your browser setting and can be zoomed to 200% without breaking the layout.
- Images have text alternatives. Decorative animation is hidden from screen readers.
- If your system is set to reduce motion, the particle and caption animations don't play. You see the finished text straight away.
- There are no videos yet. Any we add will have captions and a transcript.
The app
- Uses standard macOS controls, so VoiceOver, Full Keyboard Access and system text sizes work.
- Setup and settings work with the keyboard. Esc closes every pop-up.
- "Read it back" can read your dictated text aloud after it's typed.
- You can choose which key to hold, and use hands-free mode instead of holding a key.
